Description
A Western Maryland mountain pass provided the scenic site for this Department of Transportation rest area. It also provided unpredictable weather. Eighty mile per hour winter winds and driving snow wreaked havoc with traditional construction methods. The surrounding geological bedrock challenged foundation crews. Safety and control of traffic on Interstate 68 were daily concerns. /the finished multi-level structure is nestled in the mountainside, providing magnificent views via glass curtain walls and elevated promenades. Interstate travelers can take breaks from driving with a tour through the Interpretive Center and exhibit area.
